Discovery Week
Discovery Week is a mandatory one-week placement at the end of the first year for all undergraduate medical students at the Western University Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Students have the opportunity to shadow family physicians and learn from other health care professionals about what their typical workday encompasses. The program introduces all undergraduate medical students to the opportunities and challenges of living and working in a rural or regional community.
In addition, they also experience a wide variety of medical specialties and practices. Numerous physicians and other health care staff and administrative personnel are involved each year to provide this opportunity for students. The week also involves socializing with the physicians and gaining a sense of the community. The long-term goal is to inspire students to practice in small and mid-sized communities in Southwestern Ontario upon completion of their medical training. Hanover & District Hospital is proud to have been a participating rural community for the last several years.
